Main drivers of Indian Ocean Dipole asymmetry revealed by a simple IOD model

چکیده

Abstract Indian Ocean Dipole phenomenon (IOD) refers to a dominant zonal contrast pattern of sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) over tropical (TIO) on interannual time scales. Its positive phase, characterized by anomalously warm western TIO and cold southeastern TIO, is usually stronger than its negative namely positively skewed IOD. Here, we investigate causes for the IOD asymmetry using prototype model, which physical processes include both linear nonlinear feedback processes, El Nino’s asymmetric impact, state-dependent noise. Parameters model were empirically obtained various reanalysis SST data sets. The results reveal that leading cause without accounting seasonality local process, secondly noise, direct effect ENSO teleconnection; latter two have almost equal contribution. However, contributions each process are season dependent. For boreal summer, noise major drivers with negligible contribution from ENSO. impacts become important in fall, along other processes.

Asymmetry of the Indian Ocean Dipole. Part II: Model Diagnosis*

In this second part of a two-part paper, the mechanism for the amplitude asymmetry of SST anomalies (SSTA) between positive and negative Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) events is investigated through the diagnosis of coupled model simulations. Same as the observed in Part I, a significant negative skewness appears in the IOD east pole (IODE) in September–November (SON), whereas there is no significan...

Asymmetry of the Indian Ocean Dipole. Part I: Observational Analysis*

The physical mechanism for the amplitude asymmetry of SST anomalies (SSTA) between the positive and negative phases of the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) is investigated, using Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) and NCAR–NCEP data. It is found that a strong negative skewness appears in the IOD east pole (IODE) in the mature phase [September–November (SON)], while the skewness in the IOD west pole...

Asymmetry of the Indian Ocean Basinwide SST Anomalies: Roles of ENSO and IOD*

A basinwide warming (cooling) in the Indian Ocean is observed following the El Niño (La Niña) mature phase, with the amplitude of the warming being significantly larger than the cooling. A composite analysis reveals that the amplitude asymmetry (positive skewness) between the warm and cold Indian Ocean basinwide sea surface temperature anomaly pattern (IOB) appears only when ENSO is concurrent ...

A Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate

In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...
